I think the first Jonathan Richman song I heard was 'I'm a Little Dinosaur', followed by the iconic 'I was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar'. His wry humour and sweet, simple songs made me an immediate fan. There's something so charming about his work and I highly recommend just about his whole discography. I will add some recommendations, snippets, pics etc later! But for now please simply watch this video and learn to love him :-)
I saw Jonathan live on March 10th, 2024, at the Bell House, Brooklyn, and it was one of the best gig experiences ever! I was there with two boys, held the rounded wooden lip of the stage in one hand, and a big bag of Yemeni bread from a nearby restaurant in the other (they gave us, knowingly, an obscene amount of delicious bread). The restaurant was The Green Province Restaurant (I think - gotta check this). Highly recommend the hummus platter. Anyway, Dylan said he wouldn't play "I Was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar", but he did. My God, he did.
